New England Regional SAG User Group (NERUG)
The mission of the New England Regional SoftwareAG User Group is to provide members an active network to share their knowledge, problems and solutions with others in the region who use Software AG products.
We also strive to provide free education in "On the Edge Technology" from Software AG and various partner vendors.
And lastly, to provide Software AG with a link to the New England user community to gain insight into their needs and to promote dialogue concerning the use and future of Software AG products.

"Content Management" Peter Fasano , Account Executive, Software AG Paul Murdock , Sr. Systems Engineer , Software AG This presentation will explain the concept of "Content Management", the handling of unstructured business data (WORD documents, email, forms, PDF's, audio/video, etc) that you may need to use in conjunction with your structured data residing in your databases. This unstructured content can represent more than 80% of the content in your enterprise. The ability to merge, manage, search and present both structured and unstructured data is the Content Management strategy that has immerged. They will illustrate various strategies that can be employed to achieve this goal. Subjects such as where to store, how to access and their place in the XML and WEB environments will be discussed. |

For DBA's and Product Adminstrators : (Columbia Room, 3rd fl) Natquery (ADABAS Extraction Engine) & NatCDC ( ADABAS PLOG Engine) from A DBA's Prospective Chris Bradley, President of " NatWorks", Vermont This presentation walks the user through the sequential steps necessary to administer, build, and execute a query against an ADABAS Database from a DBA's prospective . NatQuery is a workstation-based, Graphical User Interface (GUI) application that has been specifically designed to support data extract processing against data stored in Software AG's ADABAS database, or any other data source that can be accessed using Software AG's Natural programming language. NatQuery is applicable for End-User, Data Warehousing as well as Web Publishing, and supports data extraction from ADABAS . Change Data Capture (CDC) is a term that describes the ability to take the transaction log of a database (a log which records each and every transaction made against the database) and then process this data to produce a file that details the "delta" of changes. When CDC is applied to ADABAS, the mechanism that provides the source of Change Data is the ADABAS Protection Log (PLOG). The data that a PLOG contains has a wide-range of uses to an organization. For Programmers:(Weatherly Room) Periodic Occurrence Processing David Del Rio, Sr. Technical Representative, TSI , California This paper discusses the normal NATURAL ways to access Periodic Group data (and Multiple Field data). Then it describes a method of using a special User View option for reading data via ADABAS Direct Calls within NATURAL. |

For DBA's : (Columbia Room) Adabas and Natural Performance Tips (DBA Issues) - Part 3 James Bando, Software AG Real-life statistics provided by customers related to the Natural BufferPool, Natural Turbo Buffer Pool (new with Natural V3.1.6), Adabas Utilities,Adabas Format Pool, Adabas I/O buffer pool, Natural parameters, and EntireX parameters will be reviewed with suggestions for improving performance. For Programmers: (Weatherly Room) Natural Developments in 2003 & Web-Enabling Natural Bruce Beaman - SAG These presentations will discuss first the details for Natural in 2003, the release of Natural 4 on the Mainframe and Natural 6 on Open Systems as well as corresponding Natural add-on products. We will share some of our customers forward-thinking approaches to extending their Adabas and Natural Applications . Then for Web-Enabling , there are multiple approaches for web-enabling your valuable Natural applications. We will discuss the approaches and the benefits of each for your chosen web environments. |

For DBA's :(Columbia Room) On-Line MultiFetch David DelRio, Sr. Technical Representative, TSI, California This paper describes a method of using Multifetch via NATURAL under CICS. Some sites have to read many records sequentially on-line or have a need for a rapid response. This method uses the SAG supported USR1043N entry point in NATURAL. Minutes From Last Meeting
The New England Regional Software AG User Group met on March 14, 2003 at Northeast Utilities in Berlin, CT. Terry Haydt presided. Terry thanked our hosts, Northeast Utilities, and especially Ed Hebenstreit. She also thanked all who offered condolences on the passing of her father.
Then Terry announced and presented the user group's new web site at Jonathan Kinberg, Senior Advisory Systems Engineer, gave the Software AG news update.
Dan Webster, Strategic Support Manager - Customer Relations, then gave us an update on the Denver Support Center. He showed us how the Product Support Organization is organized, and described the service delivery process.
Then James Bando, Advisory Systems Engineer, continued the presentation on Adabas and Natural Performance Tips that he started at our previous meeting. The topics that he covered this time included the Natural Buffer Pool, performance tips for Natural programs, and Natural 3.1.6 features.
After lunch, Becky Albin, Database Architect, gave two presentations. The first was an Adabas v7.4 Technical Update. She first reviewed what is relatively new in Adabas, including 64-bit exploitation (v7.1.3) and IBM Parallel Sysplex exploitation (v7.2.2). Then she discussed what happens to the database during a conversion to v7.4. Next, she went over the new features and enhancements in Adabas v7.4. Finally, she discussed Adabas Parallel Services v7.4 and Adabas Cluster Services v7.4
Becky's second presentation was on Adabas SQL Server Version 5.1 (AQA). Adabas SQL Server Version 1.4.3 is almost at the end of its lifecycle, with two more patch levels planned. Adabas SQL Server Version 5 is a complete reengineering. It is currently available in "controlled release" for OS/390 and zOS only. Adabas 8 (availability planned 2004) will have a close integration of SQL with Adabas. SQL will be shipped with the Adabas package, with access to the SQL functionality controlled via license key.
