Mary Anne Furnald gave us an update on the news from Software AG. She noted that Software AG Americas recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in the USA.
Mary Anne also mentioned the various ways that Software AG supports XML.
Our keynote presentation, on Content Management, was given by Peter Fasano, Account Executive, and Paul Murdock, Sr. Systems Engineer. Although they are Software AG employees, they support a product, Stellent, which is not a Software AG product.
Stellent, from a company of the same name, is a Content Management system. Content Management refers to the storage of unstructured data, such as Word documents, email and attachments, XML documents, faxes, etc. Stellent allows content to be checked out, edited in its native application (e.g., Word), and checked back in.
The system can be configured for automatic conversion to multiple formats, such as PDF and HTML. Stellent uses Tamino as its database engine.
We then split into 2 tracks, one for programmers, and the other for DBA's.
The first presentation on the programmer track was Periodic Occurrence Processing, by David Del Rio, Sr. Technical Representative, Treehouse Software.
David presented a method of reducing the overhead of bringing back a large number of occurrences of a PE from ADABAS. It involves the use of the 1-N syntax in the Format Buffer. This is supported by the ADABAS nucleus, but not by NATURAL. He suggested using CMADA, which can be used to issue direct calls from a NATURAL program.
The next presentation for programmers was by Bruce Beaman, of Software AG, on Natural Developments in 2003 & Web-Enabling Natural. Natural 4 for the mainframe is currently in "controlled release". General Availability will probably be in August. Bruce reviewed the features of this release. A Natural 4 Planning guide is available on the Adabas Natural Portal at .
Natural 6 for Windows is due out this summer, probably in August. It includes enhanced Web and XML capabilities.
The final presentation on the programmer track, by Chris Bradley, President of NatWorks, Vermont, was on Natquery (an ADABAS extraction engine) and NatCDC (an ADABAS PLOG engine). He presented these products from a programmer's perspective.
Chris had started the DBA track in the morning with a presentation of these products from the perspective of a DBA or Product Administrator.
The DBA track continued with James Bando, of Software AG, giving Part 3 of Adabas and Natural Performance Tips. This presentation focused on DBA issues.
The final presentation on the DBA track was On-Line MultiFetch, by David DelRio. He described a method of using Multifetch via NATURAL under CICS, using USR1043N.
