"Experiences With Disaster and Recovery Procedures of ADABAS Data on Mainframes"
by Dieter Storr, Los Angeles Times

Since September 11, the recovery of computer systems and data have became a higher priority. CEO's are increasing the recovery budgets and training recovery teams at disaster recovery conferences and seminars. I recently returned from one of our disaster recovery tests at an external site. Even though our contingency plan was well written, up-to-date, accurate, and tested, we failed in some points. It is relatively easy to back-up ADABAS databases and restore them with protection logs. But what about sequential datasets that are needed as input for some ADABAS utilities? Also, in OPEN system architecture some functions need non-ADABAS data. How can a recovery process handle this? The presentation will describe how you can back-up ADABAS and system related data, point out the recovery procedures, explain where and how to collect information to recover, and discuss the pros and cons of different approaches. Additionally, we will look at some experiences from other companies on how they recovered computer operations after September 11.

"Natural 4.1 Features"
by James Bando , Software AG

Natural 4.1 (mainframe) new features and enhancements are presented with special emphasis on features for the programmer. Program code and results are presented. The presentation also includes new and improved features for Natural administrators. Platform: IBM mainframe.

12:00 - 1:00 Lunch, provided by Software AG in the Visions Dining Room
1:00 - 2:15 Breakout sessions:

"Guidelines On How To Web-Enable Your ADABAS Data by Using Existing Natural Programs"
By Dieter Storr, Los Angeles Times

Before you discuss and compare products to present your ADABAS data to the Web, it is helpful to know about the different ways, methods and technologies to distribute data from the mainframe to the OPEN system architecture and vice versa. What do you want to use? Screen scraping or middleware? Messaging or brokering? Every method has its own products. Do you want a dialog or an asynchronous process? Asynchronous processes use queues and require high maintenance. Do you have a TP monitor with multiple TCB capabilities? Be aware that one message oriented middleware (MOM) solution has problems with this. Would you like to separate the presentation layer from the business logic and data access in your Natural programs and use existing programs or would you like to write new componentized Natural programs for web functions? If you use MOM products your system programmers may have to write many front-end programs to control, distribute, and observe the messages. Do all methods support your existing security software, for example userid's and passwords? This presentation will give you overviews about the various methods in detail, explain the different approaches with examples, and will also discuss the pros and cons of each.

"Building Web Pages for Mainframe Programmers, Part 1"
by Tanya Rhodes, Solution Specialists

The Building Web Pages is a basic how to class on writing web pages from a Mainframe's point of view - and could be thought of as a prerequisite course for the Natural Web Interface. It teaches the basic on building web pages that a programmer will need to understand whether they're using straight HTML, DHTML, CSS, XML, or XSL.

2:15 - 2:30 Break
2:45 - 3:45 Breakout sessions:

"Adabas Tuning Performance Topics"
by James Bando, Software AG

You have Adabas Review, APAS, or TRIM, but do you know what information to gather when you have a performance problem? This presentation suggests what information needs to be gathered to determine the problem. Once a problem is detected, remedies are suggested. In addition, problems related to Adabas response code 9 subcode 64, response code 9 subcode 3, and response code 48 subcode 8 are presented. Platform: IBM mainframe.

"Building Web Pages for Mainframe Programmers, Part 2"
by Tanya Rhodes, Solution Specialists
A Continuation of the session.

3:45 - 4:00 Closing remarks and drawing
Terry Haydt

Minutes From Last Meeting

President Terry Haydt announced that presentations from our meetings, when available, will be posted on our web site at . Our next meeting will be in September. We do not have the exact date as yet.

The 12th Natural Conference will be May 23-26, 2004. Terry pointed out that this conference is not just Natural any more. For more information, visit the conference web site at .

Mary Anne Furnald gave us an update on the news from Software AG. She noted that Software AG Americas recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in the USA. Mary Anne also mentioned the various ways that Software AG supports XML.

Our keynote presentation, on Content Management, was given by Peter Fasano, Account Executive, and Paul Murdock, Sr. Systems Engineer. Although they are Software AG employees, they support a product, Stellent, which is not a Software AG product. Stellent, from a company of the same name, is a Content Management system. Content Management refers to the storage of unstructured data, such as Word documents, email and attachments, XML documents, faxes, etc. Stellent allows content to be checked out, edited in its native application (e.g., Word), and checked back in. The system can be configured for automatic conversion to multiple formats, such as PDF and HTML. Stellent uses Tamino as its database engine.

We then split into 2 tracks, one for programmers, and the other for DBA's.

The first presentation on the programmer track was Periodic Occurrence Processing, by David Del Rio, Sr. Technical Representative, Treehouse Software. David presented a method of reducing the overhead of bringing back a large number of occurrences of a PE from ADABAS. It involves the use of the 1-N syntax in the Format Buffer. This is supported by the ADABAS nucleus, but not by NATURAL. He suggested using CMADA, which can be used to issue direct calls from a NATURAL program.

The next presentation for programmers was by Bruce Beaman, of Software AG, on Natural Developments in 2003 & Web-Enabling Natural. Natural 4 for the mainframe is currently in "controlled release". General Availability will probably be in August. Bruce reviewed the features of this release. A Natural 4 Planning guide is available on the Adabas Natural Portal at . Natural 6 for Windows is due out this summer, probably in August. It includes enhanced Web and XML capabilities.

The final presentation on the programmer track, by Chris Bradley, President of NatWorks, Vermont, was on Natquery (an ADABAS extraction engine) and NatCDC (an ADABAS PLOG engine). He presented these products from a programmer's perspective.

Chris had started the DBA track in the morning with a presentation of these products from the perspective of a DBA or Product Administrator.

The DBA track continued with James Bando, of Software AG, giving Part 3 of Adabas and Natural Performance Tips. This presentation focused on DBA issues.

The final presentation on the DBA track was On-Line MultiFetch, by David DelRio. He described a method of using Multifetch via NATURAL under CICS, using USR1043N.
